Behobia-San Sebastián is a 20 km road race with enormous tradition in the Basque Country, run point to point from Behobia on the French border into the centre of San Sebastián. The route is rolling rather than flat, with its sharpest climbs late on, and it draws a huge popular field alongside club and elite runners.

Weather on the Bay of Biscay is the main variable, since wind or rain on the exposed stretches changes how times compare with earlier editions. The hills spread finishing times far more than a flat 20 km would, so pacing decides much of the result. Most of the prediction interest sits with the Basque and wider Spanish runners at the front.

Distance running is shaped by pacing discipline, course profile and whether the field races for time or purely for position. Heat, humidity and wind slow finishing times far more than most spectators assume, so conditions and results move together. Depth of field decides whether a race becomes a tactical crawl or an honest hard effort. Interest usually sits on head to head matchups, podium finishes and whether a time threshold is beaten.
