The 'Run for the Roses'. 1.25 miles on Dirt. The field is large (20 horses), making traffic a nightmare. 'Tactical Speed' is the winning trait, horses that can sit just off the leaders (3rd or 4th place) and pounce on the final turn. Closers coming from last place rarely navigate the traffic in time. Pay close attention to the 'Prep Races' (Florida Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, Santa Anita Derby). The Florida Derby winner has a disproportionately high success rate in Kentucky.

Horse racing turns on distance, going, draw and weight carried, and each of those can matter more than reputation. Pace in the race itself decides whether front runners survive or closers get the finish they need. Trainer form, time since the last run and step up or down in class all shape a chance. Interest usually sits on each way prices, forecast and place markets, and matchups between two runners.
